Ara Alekyan (Born 1959)
Graduated from Yerevan State Institute of Arts and Theatre in1985. Member of Artists’ Union of Armenia since 1988. Ara Alekyan’s sculptures are displayed in Armenia, Russia, Belgium, USA and Italy, both in private collections and public spaces. Ara Alekyan’s unique approach features special choice of material and subjects. This approach is clearly visible in his both animalistic sculptures (spiders, scorpions, fish, rhinos, horses, bulls), portraits (Parajanov) and other figurative works. It might seem that usage of metal parts could limit the artists, but Alekyan’s creative and constructive mind freely transforms these mechanistic details into most unexpected forms. His aesthetics are based on three main principles – Metal as material, Welding as technique, Idea as a base for shape.
